CRIME WATCH PROGRAM
One of the goals of the Schuylkill Haven Police Department is to provide a
safe environment where our citizens work and enjoy life.
One step in our partnership with the community is to renew the Citizen’s
Crime Watch.
The Citizen's Crime Watch is an opportunity for residents to meet some
officers who protect and serve your community. It is an opportunity to assist
the police department in providing a safer environment to our Borough. The
relationship between the Police Department and the community can only be
enhanced by this partnership. Citizens may gain a greater understanding of
what our officers do in Schuylkill Haven.
The police department is currently involved with a community Crime Watch in
the North Berne St. area. This group is designed to be additional eyes & ears
for the police department to alert them to suspicious circumstances in their
neighborhood.
The police department is considering instituting a crime watch for the entire
borough. If you are interested in forming a group in your area, please
contact Officer Gregory Meisner at the police station.
NRA GUN SAFETY PROGRAM
The police department is currently instructing the NRA Eddie the Eagle gun
safety course in the Schuylkill Haven Elementary School. The program focuses
on keeping kids safe from firearms. The police department, in cooperation
with the Schuylkill Haven School District, intends to expand the program into
other grades of the elementary school next year. The Eddie Eagle GunSafe®
Program teaches children in pre-K through third grade important steps to take
if they find a gun. These steps are presented in an easy format consisting of
the following simple rules: If you see a gun: STOP! Don't Touch .Leave the
Area. Tell an Adult . The NRA started the program in 1988, The Eddie Eagle
GunSafe® Program is instructed to over one million children each year in all
50 states. The program was developed through the joint labors of
professionals including clinical psychologists, education specialists,
housing safety officials, and law enforcement personnel. The main focus of
the program is to promote the protection and safety of children.
D.A.R.E. PROGRAM
The Schuylkill Haven Police Department and the Schuylkill Haven School
District started instruction of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.)
program in the Schuylkill Haven Middle School in 1994. Officers instruct 5th
grade students in resisting drugs, alcohol, & tobacco. It also helps reduce
peer pressure and addresses bullying. The D.A.R.E. program concludes with a
graduation ceremony and the D.A.R.E. Challenge. The D.A.R.E. challenge is a
series of athletic team activities to help build camaraderie and class
spirit.
ABANDONED VEHICLES
Abandoned vehicles are classified under Ordinance 995 as any vehicle that:
1. is not registered or;
2. is not inspected or;
3. has not been moved for 30 days.
This includes vehicles located on public or private property within the
Borough of Schuylkill Haven. The penalty for failure to comply shall entail a
fine up to a maximum of $600 plus costs. Each day that a violation of this
ordinance continues shall constitute a separate offense. If you have an
abandoned vehicle on your property, or know of such a vehicle on a highway or
other public property, please report it to the borough police by calling
570-385-2747
Motor Vehicle Accident Reports
Accident reports come in two different forms, reportable and non-reportable.
A reportable accident is generally one that involved any injury or a vehicle
needed to be towed from the scene. A non-reportable accident is one that does
not meet this criteria. The police officer determines the type of accident
during the investigation process as the accident investigation proceeds.
Copies of reportable accidents are generally available approximately 5
working days after the accident is reported. This may be longer depending on
the type of accident and the officer’s work schedule.
Copies of non-reportable accidents are usually recorded on a Schuylkill haven
Police courtesy form and are considered a information exchange only. These
are usually available provided to vehicle drivers on the scene. If not, these
forms are generally available within 24 hours of the accident and will only
provide the information about the drivers and vehicles involved and a brief
comment on the accident.
The investigating officer observes and documents information from the
operators, witnesses, and personal observations on-scene. The officer does
not determine who is at fault in an accident. The issuance of a traffic
citation does not determine fault. The evaluation of who is at fault is up to
the insurance companies for subrogation purposes.
Copies of all police accident reports cost $15.00. Payment may be in the form
of cash or check made payable to "BOROUGH OF SCHUYLKILL HAVEN".
You may request a copy of an accident report by visiting or calling the
police department.
